Summer finally arrived in late August and continued until mid-September here in Sea-to-Sky country. I was pretty much at a loss for summery bottoms to wear... no skirts, no capris, and only 2 pairs of yoga shorts that fit. And I can't wear yoga shorts to my office job.
So I made myself some maternity capri pants using Simplicity 3850 (a Built By Wendy pattern). It came together sooo easily, mostly due to the fact that I didn't need to put in a zipper or a proper waistband. I used some 2.5" elastic and covered it with jersey from my hubby's old t-shirt (which was from the company he got laid off from - take that!) to make a stretchy maternity-friendly band.
I had some lightweight navy stretch twill in my fabric stash leftover from my Marine Pin-Up Dress that worked perfectly for the capris. The mock-flap pockets on the back and button loops on the legs were finished off with some mother-of-pearl buttons I already had (please excuse the weird hungry-bum look going on in the photos, lol).
They are so comfy and I think they look pretty chic. I've worn them a few times to work and have gotten lots of compliments on them. I paired it with a slightly reworked me-made blouse in these photos. I made this blouse last summer but unpicked the elastic waist and moved it up to more of a babydoll style. I prefer it this way, and not just because I'm preggo... I'll wear it like this after our babe arrives in the New Year.
Happy Monday everyone!

I saw these on BurdaStyle. They look fantastic! I'm also in need of maternity wear but since autumn is here, I'll have to make a pair of long pants and I'll try using your idea for the waistband.
ReplyDeleteThanks Brigita! Yes it was so easy to alter this pattern since the rise is already quite low. All you need to do is just add your own stretchy waistband! I want to make some long pants now for fall too - I can't wait to see what you come up with. Happy sewing (and happy pregnancy!) xxx
ReplyDeleteThank you for the good wishes - happy pregnancy to you too.
ReplyDeleteI actually re-fashioned an old pair of pants this way and I'm very satisfied with the result. I'll post about it on my blog soon.
